Traditional Wedding Cake Toppers
Couples that are planning a traditional wedding reception may want a classic wedding cake display rather than some of the more modern trends, such as serving cupcakes or contemporary monogram cake toppers. A look at the evolution of the wedding cake over the last century will provide some good ideas for a traditional wedding cake topper.
The classic 3 or 4-tiered white frosted wedding cake became popular at the end of the 19th century. The popular bride and groom figurines standing side by had caught on by the 1920′s. Most of these wedding cake toppers were hand crafted from porcelain and portray the wedding couple in their tux and gown. There was not much variation in these original wedding cake toppers; the bride and groom were white and attractive, not unlike most of the movie stars at the time.
During the 1940′s, military uniforms replaced the tux on some of the groom figurines, as many couples married before the husband went off to war. By the fifties and sixties, popular culture took over and Elvis and other famous people were being used as inspiration for the cake toppers.
If you are looking for one of these traditional wedding cake toppers you can either look for an original, antique topper, or buy one of the reproductions that are being made today. If you would rather have a cake topper that is a little more current, you have a lot to choose from. The newer figurines are made with all different hair colors, skin colors and nationalities.
In addition to the traditional figurines, there are humorous wedding cake toppers and even personalized wedding cake toppers that are custom made to look like the bride and groom. If your wedding cake has a real traditional style or even a retro theme, you may want to go back to the good old days to find some old-fashioned cake toppers to complete the look. You could even ask family and friends if they have an old cake topper that you could borrow for your big day. Unless, of course, you want your own keepsake to remember your wedding cake and the day you were married.
